3 out of 5 stars Nice watch but hard to read   November 29, 2008
Dale R. Kramer (USA)
The size and features of this G shock are fine. However the the black background on the three digital displays are hard to read. This is even harder at night with or without the watch light. The watch light is not a backlit light rather a side light that does nothing to illumante the LED digets.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Performance from Casio G-Shock   November 25, 2008
Eric (Pittsburgh, PA USA)
This G-Shock AWG101-1A (paid 83.00 on 11/01/08) is everything you need in a watch. I have read all the reviews so I will not harp on already known facts. First the pros: Dependable, rugged, good looking and very accurate time. I live in Pittsburgh and the watch updates atomically daily. Illumination of analog hands is good. LED is adequate to see analog hands. Some Cons: As many have mentioned LED will not allow you to see digital features such as date or stop watch at night. If there is one problem with this watch it is that there is no back light. However do not let this hold you back from purchase. I am very happy and have no issues with the watch what so ever. I really have no need to access the digital features at night. I wanted dependability, accuracy and good looks and that is what I got from the G-Shock.

3 out of 5 stars Some great features, but ...   October 25, 2008

First, let me say that I've owned this watch for about six weeks. I bought it on Amazon for $103. after watching the price jump around between $98 and $130. My timing in the market should be so good.

Positives:
* This is truly a beautiful watch. Stylish, not gigantic like some, great band, and rugged.
* It is accurate. Because I live too far from Ft. Collins, CO, I had to set the watch manually. It hasn't varied by even one second.
* There is a certain wow factor in designating you time zone and watching the hands move automatically.
* The watch has a lot of features, most of them useful. I especially like having both a stopwatch and countdown timer.
* Instead of using the teeny included manual, you can download a PDF and actually see what you're reading.
* Never needing to replace the battery is a wonderful feature.

Negatives:
* As many reviewers have mentioned, the digital readouts are hard to see except in perfect lighting.
* Don't expect the illumination feature to do much good.
* The bottom digital window is worthless. Casio could have assigned a useful function.
* If you want to use a digital window, try not to do it when one of the hands is in the way. Oops, that's most of the time.
* I'll take an analog watch over digital any day. However, this one lacks a sweep second hand. This is something I didn't catch while researching this watch, and I must say I really miss it.

Bottom Line:
If you decide to purchase this product, prepare to read the manual and tinker with the watch for at least an hour. I love gadgets and figuring out these kinds of things. How about you??
I'm keeping the watch because the positives outweigh the negatives.

2 out of 5 stars Just ok...   October 11, 2008

Purchased the item as a gift for my boyfriend. Had all the qualities he wanted- digital and dial watch. Only problem is that you cannot see the digital part of the watch, the date or the other circle because the company made it dark with light colored numbers. Back light only lights half the watch which may make it difficult for some to read. I returned the watch and picked another casio- back light is still impossible, but you can read everything else.

5 out of 5 stars Great sports watch   September 19, 2008
Lawrence J. Herrmann (Oceanside, CA United States)
I ordered and received this watch a few weeks ago, aftyer searching for a watch that I could wear to work as well as my weekend kayaking. It was very easy to set up, although the manual is small and has really small print. Out of the box to on my wrist was probably 10 minutes.

Since then it has endured salt water, lake water as well as just everyday use. The dial is very easy to read, and the night viewing is also good with the LED illumination. The band has been very comfortable while paddling as well, not restrictive and plenty of "give."

Any improvements I can think of? Sure. I'd make it more automatic to change time zones, more flexibility to switch the digital displays, and maybe add a second had rather than a permanent seconds display.

But those would all probably add to the price and for what I paid, I am very happy.
